KTM BLOG: MARC COMA IS BACK IN THE SADDLE (IN HIS NATURAL HABITAT)

With the first KTM Ultimate Race just around the corner, we had a chat with Marc Coma, the great warrior of the African and South American Dakars. We discussed about the mysteries of the rally raid and the irresistible attraction of the Dakar. The toughest race on the planet has been changing a lot lately, yet its spirit and complexity have remained the same throughout its 41 years. A challenge for those who go, a dream for those who stay, like Thierry Sabine used to say; no one understands this better than Marc Coma, a five-time Dakar winner…. READ MORE>

SONORA RALLY SS5 & PODIUM: ONE LAST HURRAH

Friday, March 22nd, was a day which for many was bittersweet. The race was demanding, more than you might find at any other event of its kind in North America. And not just for the competitors, and their teams, but for everyone involved. Early mornings, late nights. In a constant state of motion, if not physically, then mentally and emotionally – and running on a tank about three-quarters empty. It’s not easy. There are moments when it’s not even fun. So, why is it as the time comes to say goodbye, there’s a sudden loss for words?… READ MORE>

KTM: THE TEAM BEHIND THE (DAKAR) TEAM OR FIVE SHORT STORIES OF LOVE AND PASSION – PART 2

We talked to five of those who joined the orange family only for Dakar. They came to Lima to take care of riders, team, trucks, motorhomes, and KTM customers. THE 2018 NEVADA 200

Somehow the 12 hour drive seems to just fade away after a great adventure, and this year’s Nevada 200 was no exception. Hanging out with old friends, trading stories, and making new stories with those who don’t know our old stories. Our drive was nothing compared to some who came as far as Vermont, Montana and other far flung places, to ride this year’s version of the Darrell Folks/Scott Harden epic. As usual, the event provided three days of incredible trails, trees and sand washes (ugh). This year’s event would have done Casey Folks proud as the event provided some spectacular riding, as well as some “Casey and desert legend Jack Johnson” trails. And for the more adventurous, the famous Ho-Che-Jack trail- not for the faint of heart!… READ MORE>

Upshift contributors Tim Burke and Chris Modell both had eyes for Scotland and when rental and tour company rentamotorcycle.co.uk said they would show them the way, they jumped at the chance. It took a lot of convincing…okay fine, it didn’t take any convincing when Chris Glaspell, editor of Upshift Online, contacted me to ask if I was interested in riding motorcycles on narrow, twisty, and jaw-droppingly scenic roads. That wasn’t all he had to say though…we would be riding with an expert local guide on brand new rental motorcycles. Oh, and one more thing: he needed us to report back on the groups’ findings about the best whisky that this slice of heaven had to offer!…

2019 DAKAR: SS10, KINGS OF THE DESERT

A challenge is meant to bring out the best in someone. Or uncover their worst. At the end of this most ultimate of challenges, were so many more successes than failures. Lessons learned, and goals achieved. As the curtains closed on the 2019 Dakar Rally, Toby finally gets his kiss. Laia gives Toby a long-overdue haircut. Nassir won Dakar for a third time. MOJAVE PRESERVE: ADVENTURE RIDE WITH SCOT HARDEN

Over the years I’ve developed a strong affection for the portion of the California desert now referred to as the Mojave National Preserve; an almost spiritual connection to being in its domain. I can’t explain it or point to a specific cause, all I know is I just love being there. My first visit to this corner of the desert was in the spring of 1973 (long before it was a National Park) while on an exploration ride with riding buddies Casey Folks, Jack Johnson and Max Switzer. Back then whenever there was a break in the racing calendar, we would go on day rides south out of Las Vegas into this remote and relatively unknown area. At 17, these rides were my first introduction to long-distance “adventure” riding. A typical ride usually lasted from dawn to dusk and covered well over 250 miles.  Since we all rode Husky two-strokes back then we would carry 2-cycle oil to mix with gas (where we could find it in various small towns and outposts along the way). Even that was an adventure, as sometimes fuel was in short supply or unavailable all together.  Which reminds me of the time we had to “borrow” fuel from an unattended BLM service truck, but I digress. Suffice it to say, my love affair with the mysteries of the Mojave began long ago and over the years I have returned to the Preserve to recharge the batteries, replenish the soul and to share it with friends...

We had good jobs, a nice apartment and thought about having a family. At the same time we shared a feeling of curiosity and a desire to explore the world. Each pro-con list we made had a long list of ‘cons’ but also the words: Now or never! We feared to regret the decision to stay at home and so it happened that day in December 2013 when we got on our motorbikes, waved our family and friends goodbye and left. First destination: Africa!

ASPROMONTE ITALY: THE ROUGH MOUNTAIN

The foreign tourist imagery about Italy is captured by pictures of the Coliseum, postcards of Michelangelo’s David and Milano Fashion week. Tuscany countryside rules when you talk about landscape; so clean and orderly to look like it was designed by a landscape architect. But the South of Nation offers stronger emotions and, if you decide to ride in it, you’ll feel the same sensations as if you were traveling very far from Europe. For a long time Calabria, the foot of this boot-shaped peninsula, remained isolated from the rest of Italy because of political and historical reasons. Notably, the southernmost tip maintained its wild and unexplored character until now. Its name is Aspromonte, which translated sounds like “ The Rough Mountain.”...

I recently came across a couple of lists for the “Top 10 Desert Racers of All Time” and naturally they caught my attention. When someone says “best desert racer of all time” it means something very special to me...
