HUSQVARNA FE250 PROJECT BIKE

It’s seems more and more that people who work in the moto industry have a harder time to stay motivated to ride than ever before, and one of those guys is my good friend Marc Blanchard from 100%. Marc is an industry icon who has changed the way most of us view the look of factory bikes and moto gear. A few months ago Marc was really excited to let me know that he had purchased a Husqvarna FE250 for his vacation home in Big Bear. His goal was to start riding some single track...

CROSSING THE CONGO

The adventure of our lifetime started with a simple premise: “Let’s go for a ride south!” At the time Jon and I were architects based in Romania. Going south meant unplugging from our career and switching continents to travel into Africa. So we strapped our essentials on a Yamaha XT660Z Ténéré and left. The serendipity of specifics would unfold along the way...

TOURING MACHINE - HONDA VFR1200X

You are checking out this review because you like adventure bikes, that’s why you read UpShift Online. This 2017 Honda VFR1200X falls into Honda’s adventure line of motorcycles, which includes the XR650L and the Africa Twin. Honda even considers the 500X and the 700X part of their adventure line. Die-hard adventure riders are rolling their eyes right now knowing that anyone would call this VFR1200X an adventure bike and we get it, it’s not an Africa Twin or a KTM 1190 or even a BMW GS, but it will handle a bit of dirt. We know this because we rode it in the dirt, and by some riders’ standards and definition...

TESTED: HELITE TURTLE AIRBAG VEST

Let’s face it, most motorcycle safety products are just not cool. Back in the 60’s wearing a helmet wasn’t cool and arguably it still isn’t. But, would I ride my bike without one now? Definitely not.  Airbag technology for motorcycles is no different. It is fairly new to the market but is now widely being used in MotoGP, with the likes of Alpinestars and Dianese leading the way with their high-end electronic-triggered airbag technology.  In years to come we will all be wearing them, just as we now wear seatbelts and have airbags in our cars...

HONDA ADVENTURE GROM PROJECT BIKE

The Honda Grom is fast becoming a very popular little machine, and a lot of guys are turning them into small road racing machines for the track, or just tearing around their neighborhoods. Since we are mainly into off-road adventure riding, we wanted to take the motorcycle in a different direction and turn the Grom into a a bit more of a Dual Sport/Adventure bike. What really spawned the idea of modifying our Grom was the rear fender/ license plate area. The Grom comes from the factory with a rear fender that nearly reaches the ground in stock form...

TESTED: KUIU SUPER DOWN SLEEPING BAG 30°

Down has the highest warmth to weight ratio of any insulating material, but it has one glaring downside: once wet, insulating powers are lost. Covering the down in a waterproof breathable fabric has been done, but condensation gets trapped in humid conditions and the down loses loft and insulating value. Recent innovations in coating the down feathers with water repellent compounds have virtually eliminated this huge drawback. The direct to consumer ultralight hunting brand Kuiu has chosen what they feel is the best of these offerings. Kuiu uses Quix Down from textile...

AMSTERDAM TO ANYWHERE: PART ONE

Quitting your job, renting out the house and leaving for a 3-year motorcycle trip around the world: you can probably think of plenty of reasons why it’s impossible for you to do this. We could too. We had good jobs, a nice apartment and thought about having a family. At the same time we shared a feeling of curiosity and a desire to explore the world. Each pro-con list we made had a long list of ‘cons’ but also the words: Now or never! We feared to regret the decision to stay at home and so it happened that day in December 2013 when we got on our motorbikes, waved our family and friends goodbye and left. First destination: Africa!

ASPROMONTE ITALY: THE ROUGH MOUNTAIN

The foreign tourist imagery about Italy is captured by pictures of the Coliseum, postcards of Michelangelo’s David and Milano Fashion week. Tuscany countryside rules when you talk about landscape; so clean and orderly to look like it was designed by a landscape architect. But the South of Nation offers stronger emotions and, if you decide to ride in it, you’ll feel the same sensations as if you were traveling very far from Europe. For a long time Calabria, the foot of this boot-shaped peninsula, remained isolated from the rest of Italy because of political and historical reasons. Notably, the southernmost tip maintained its wild and unexplored character until now. Its name is Aspromonte, which translated sounds like “ The Rough Mountain.”...
