MOJAVE PRESERVE: ADVENTURE RIDE WITH SCOT HARDEN

Over the years I’ve developed a strong affection for the portion of the California desert now referred to as the Mojave National Preserve; an almost spiritual connection to being in its domain. I can’t explain it or point to a specific cause, all I know is I just love being there.
My first visit to this corner of the desert was in the spring of 1973 (long before it was a National Park) while on an
exploration ride with riding buddies...

AMSTERDAM TO ANYWHERE: PART ONE

Quitting your job, renting out the house and leaving for a 3-year motorcycle trip around the world: you can probably think of plenty of reasons why it’s impossible for you to do this. We could too. We had good jobs, a nice apartment and thought about having a family. At the same time we shared a feeling of curiosity and a desire to explore the world. Each pro-con list we made had a long list of ‘cons’ but also the words: Now or never! We feared to regret the decision to stay at home and so it happened that day in December 2013 when we got on our motorbikes, waved our family and friends goodbye and left. First destination: Africa!

TESTED: ROTTWEILER PERFORMANCE
KTM ADVENTURE 950/990 TAIL TIDY

The back end of a KTM Adventure 950/990 looks like a complete afterthought. Huge bulbous plastic hangs off what would be a clean tail section, turn signals ready to be torn off in the slightest get off, and the low hanging fender ready to be sucked into the rear knobby during aggressive maneuvers. It almost seems like a generic tail section was hastily bolted on to the bike just to meet minimum legal standards...

ASPROMONTE ITALY: THE ROUGH MOUNTAIN

The foreign tourist imagery about Italy is captured by pictures of the Coliseum, postcards of Michelangelo’s David and Milano Fashion week. Tuscany countryside rules when you talk about landscape; so clean and orderly to look like it was designed by a landscape architect. But the South of Nation offers stronger emotions and, if you decide to ride in it, you’ll feel the same sensations as if you were traveling very far from Europe. For a long time Calabria, the foot of this boot-shaped peninsula, remained isolated from the rest of Italy because of political and historical reasons. Notably, the southernmost tip maintained its wild and unexplored character until now. Its name is Aspromonte, which translated sounds like “ The Rough Mountain.”...

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: 2018 KAWASAKI KLX250

As we pulled out of O’Neill Regional in Orange County, California, I was looking forward to a good trail ride on the new Kawasaki KLX250. If I had to place where the KLX250 would fit in the dual-sport hierarchy, I would say it’s an entry-level machine with some great new looks. How would it perform on and off-road? The new KLX comes in two new designs, with Lime Green, and Matrix Camo. The styling is really cool in my opinion, as Kawi have taken some design cues from their motocross KX line with two-piece shrouds, KX front fork guards...

SECOND THOUGHTS ABOUT FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
2018 SUZUKI V-STROM 1000XT

It’s no secret we live in an age of information overload which means first impressions are more important than ever. Everyday we make judgments based on our initial response to a given stimulus; those important first few seconds where we formulate an opinion based on a first reaction. We rely on this more so today than at any other time, almost by necessity.  First impressions save us time and, if we are any good at all, we are usually pretty much on target in the end...
