TESTED: BIG AGNES FLY CREEK UL2 TENT

When gearing up for a proper adventure, riders are always fighting weight and limited packing space. It’s seemingly an endless compromise between bringing absolute necessities vs. creature comforts; reducing weight and space of all considered items lessens the concessions the avid adventurer must make. The Big Agnes Fly Creek UL 2 tent provides essential protection without adding unnecessary weight or bulk. The most amazing specification of the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 is the weight: 2 lbs., 5 oz. maximum weight...

TESTED: SHINKO 804/805 ADVENTURE TRAIL TIRES

Although the Shinko 804/805 Adventure Trail combo has been around for a while, many riders are starting to use this 60% dirt, 40% road tire as it offers great performance at a competitive price. The initial feel on the road with a brand new set was very predictable. Let’s face it, we think of our adventure bikes as oversize dirt bikes, and the Shinkos handled the street and freeway with no problems even with their aggressive knobbies. We had a set mounted on our Honda Africa Twin DCT and after the rains in Southern California we hit the moist dirt, and these tires really started to be at home....

JEREMY MCGRATH - KAWASAKI KX450
DESERT PROJECT BIKE

Upshift: Jeremy McGrath, 7-time Supercross Champion, all the stadiums, all the lights, all the fans, and we’re out here in the desert by ourselves, why is that?!  McGrath: Ha ha, because we love motorcycles! Yeah, it’s cool with the fans, with the jumps, and the supercross and all the excitement, but the reason I did that is that I love to ride bikes. We are out here with some friends enjoying some of this wet California dirt that we don’t get very often...

BLAZING SADDLES - DUCATI SCRAMBLER DESERT SLED

Is it a small ADV bike, or a large trail bike? Well after riding the new Ducati Scrambler Desert sled, it’s safe to say it’s both. When Upshift got the call to attend the Desert Sled intro in the south of Spain, I packed my open face Biltwell helmet, Alpinestars Oscar jacket, Sidi Adventure 2 boots, and a pair of jeans and headed out to the south of Spain. The famous spaghetti western film set in Fort Bravo was the base for our test rides on the new Ducati...

TESTED: MOTOZ TRACTIONATOR ADVENTURE TIRES

Aussie company MotoZ is making a big push in the ADV market with their Tractionator Adventure tires. The first thing that strikes you when you see the tires is their huge amount of tread. Compared to the KTM1190R stock Continental TKC80 rear, the Tractionator looks like it has almost double the tread depth to start. Using basic math skills it’s easy to see why people are getting about 5,000 miles out of the Tractionators versus an average of 2,500 from the Conti...

NEPAL - THE UNKNOWN ADVENTURE

We’re 12,000 feet above sea level. The road to the top of the mountain pass has been swallowed by a glacial waterfall. The rocks glisten in the mid-day sun, water lapping and flowing over the sheer cliff to the valley floor below. I attack it with every ounce of skill I’ve got, feet dancing on the pegs and beads of sweat forming on my head. The oxygen starved air has robbed me and the banana yellow XR250 of the little horsepower we started with. I manage to smash my way across the rocks with good speed and a small degree of finesse...

KTM 1090 ADVENTURE R LAUNCH
TEMECULA, CALIFORNIA

The all-new KTM 1090 AdventureR is a newly defined direction for the previous 1190 AdventureR.  KTM is positioning this new model as a large dual-sport motorcycle, and it is getting back to off-road basics, as opposed to the finely honed “adventure travel” style of the new 1290 SuperAdventureR. Although the new 1290 is definitely off-road capable, the 1090 is firmly aimed at the rider who wants to spend most of their time on the dirt, and use the road....

UK > USA: AN ENGLISHMAN IN UTAH

Ignorance and a lack of knowledge is a brilliant way to travel. The less you know, the more amazed you’ll be. Traveling without prior investigation brings its problems, but the heightened explosion of awe is worth every hurdle that needs to be clambered over. You’ll miss things, but the sights you see, the smells you absorb and the trails you ride will be exponentially more immense. The intensity of riding into Zion National Park without knowing there was even a cliff in the area is enough to drive a man crazy upon the return to civilization....
